ONICON is pleased to announce the addition of two new meters to their expansive product offering. The model F-2700 and F-1500.
The new F-2700 Insertion steam flow meter utilizes the same electronics and has the same optional features as the existing vortex flow meters. Vortex flow meters detect the frequency of alternating low pressure vortices that are formed as flow is diverted around a bluff body. These swirling low pressure zones apply lateral pressure first to one side, then to the other side of the bluff body, which in turn causes the body to vibrate. the frequency of the vibration is directly proportion to the flow velocity.
Just like the existing line of vortex flow meters, the F-2700 works very well in steam applications. It is critical to match the flow velocity range in the pipe to the operating range of the meter in order to achieve good results.
The F-2700 is a great choice for larger steam lines where the flow rates do match the operating range of the meter, such as individual boiler monitoring (especially a high capacity, low pressure boiler) . In these cases, the no moving parts design can be an accurate, reliable and cost effective solution. The F-2700 can also be a great choice for medium or high temperature hot water flow.
The F-1500 is also an Insertion Flow Meter. Just like the F-2700, the F-1500 works very well in steam applications. And just like other vortex flow meters, it is critical to match the flow velocity range in the pipe to the operating range of the meter in order to achieve good results. The F-1500 may be a good choice for applications in steam lines where it is not practical or desirable to downsize the line for metering, however, this product will require regular periodic maintenance that vortex meters typically do not require.
The F-1500 differs from the vortex meters in a number of ways. Most importantly, it is a moving parts design that features interchangeable turbines. This means that the rotor can be selected for the application. Each turbine has a different pitch to the rotor blades. Varying the pitch allows each turbine to operate over a unique flow range. Matching the pitch of turbine rotor to the expected flow in the pipe allows you to optimize the performance of the meter for the application.
In summary, the F-1500 is a good option for larger oversized steam lines. In these cases, the F-1500 can be an accurate, reliable and cost effective solution, but keep in mind it also means the meter will need maintenance every few years.
